Of these, 6 Japanese players participated. Only Chikyuu and White made it to the finals. About half of the Japanese players who had come to B5 were intent on making a good showing in MvC2, and had practiced long and hard. However, it was no surprise that the American level of play is very high. Even LiquidMetal, considered to be one of Japan's top Marvel players, did not make it past the qualifying round. Although Chikyuu and White made it to the finals, they were stopped by some of the best players from the U.S. Chikyuu was eliminated without posting a single win. White on the other hand, managed to advance through the tournament before losing to Justin Wong. He then lost to Alex Valle in the loser's bracket. He managed to end tied for 9th-12th. The results display the difference in skill level between the U.S. and Japan, but I think it's safe to say that White did well against the best players in the world. The finals pitted the best from the East Coast, Justin Wong, against the West Coast champion Duc Do. Justin went on to win and become the undisputed MvC2 champion, with B5 being his 3rd first place finish in a major tournament. "Street Fighter Zero 3" Zero 3 had about 160 entrants. All 9 Japanese players entered, and 8 qualified. It seems as if no matter what level of play you are in Japan, you play (is it "played" now?) Z3, evident in the fact that most of the Japanese went on to the finals. Of special significance were D44 ("Da-yoshi", aka BAS) and Chikyuu. BAS played a solid tournament, even when he lost a game to Alex Valle in the semi-finals, he came back to win the next two sets, and also the match. He advanced to the finals of the winner's bracket to await whoever would survive the loser's. On the other hand, Chikyuu went through Alex Valle, John Choi, Mike Watson, and other top Z3 players - these players represented the U.S. in last year's Japan-U.S. tournament. Chikyuu was sent to the loser's bracket, but eventually won the loser's bracket. Because of this, the tournament resulted in an unprecedented All-Japan final, with BAS facing Chikyuu. The almost 200 in attendance crowded behind the two players to show their support. When Chikyuu selected R.Mika, the audience cried out in bewilderment and approval, but he was unable to steal even one game from BAS. Congratulations go to BAS for a 4-game sweep in the finals. "Capcom vs. SNK" About 200 people entered Capcom vs. SNK. 9 Japanese entered, and only two qualified - Chikyuu and Yoshi. It seems as if many people play this game in the U.S. as well, and there were many Nakoruru teams displaying great skill. Chikyuu made it through the tournament unscathed. He faced Jason Nelson in the finals of the winner's bracket, and although he sent him to the loser's bracket, Nelson won that bracket to setup a rematch in the finals. With this kind of situation, all the Japanese wanted Nelson to do well against Chikyuu. However, the score became 1-3 in favor of Chikyuu. It was do-or-die for Nelson. He went on to show his perseverance, learning the matchups and forcing a 3-3 tie. In the sevent game, both players' characters were left with very little energy. The tension in the air was thick - but Chikyuu fought through it, rolling through a Sonic Boom to end the tournament with a 720 super grab. The final score was 4-3, with Chikyuu the winner of the tournament! Congratulations Chikyuu!! Chikyuu stood triumphant as the almost 200 in attendance cheered on.
