2 Character Bug
This page will explain all the ways to do the 2-Character glitch as well as the properties that come along with it. There is a lot of potential with the bug to create more bugs and very elaborate combos and situations. The glitch has been out for a while, I think it was originally found by Jadon Brown who is MIA (and has been for a while). Joo says that his friend found it around the same time as well. Anyway the bug provides itself extremely helpful when making elaborate combos or even testing concepts. Certain concepts require elaborate setups to get both characters to do exactly what you need, however, with the two character bug, you can sometimes have the second character fly behind the opponent (who is attacking) and hit them. This saves a ton of time because you don't have to setup zombies or fireballs across the entire screen.
In my opinion, the best example of the 2 character bug's uses were shown in Meikyousisui Vol10. Each clip that used the two character bug had its own unique idea behind it. I'm tempted to break down the video to explain each concept that presented itself along the way but it'll probably be done in another article. However, I will talk about my favorite one: the last combo with Psylocke, Rogue, and Ruby Heart. The combo used Rogue as the glitched character so she can do her super on the person right before they were about to dizzy. As Rogue was doing her super, Psylocke super jumped up and hit Sentinel causing him to dizzy out, and immediately (less than 2 frames), Rogue catches him with the grab portion of her super. This effectively breaks the dizziness and lets Psylocke continue to combo Sentinel indefinitely.
The two character bug can be really elaborate and pretty confusing, I'm not sure how much of it Joo is going to use in his Combo DVD but I'm going to try to cover as much of it as I can just for completion's sake. I'll start the page by covering the different ways to do the 2 character glitch. I don't know why but I feel inclined to mention that no gameshark or any hacking device is necessary to do it. It's all taking advatange of the game's engine and exploiting the system.
Methods of Doing the Bug
Spider-Man Black Heart
This is the oldest way of doing the bug and probably the most limiting. You're required to have Black Heart on one team, and on the other, Spider-Man and Omega Red. The bug starts off with 'x' doing a super + Omega Red's coil and dhc'ing into Spider-Man's Ultimate Web Throw. Then, while the UWT is going on, Black Heart tags into his other character. Here's the clip of how the setup looks. Not sure why it works with Black Heart and not other characters (unsure if it's all). Black Heart-Spider-Man Setup. JPGS:

Shuma-Magneto
Another way of doing the bug is with Shuma-Gorath and Magneto on capture assist. This only requires the players to have Magneto and Shuma, the other characters can be anyone else. However, it's extremely difficult to time the setup. Shuma-Gorath-Magneto Setup. If the timing is different (one frame high or low) the bug won't work. The timing is based on the frame where the Hyper-grav lets them go but before it completely animates. If it's too soon, it'll just grab them like usual; if it's a little bit too late, it'll grab them like usual; if it's much too late, it'll completely miss. The grab happens right before the character changes animation and gets completely let go from the Hyper-grav. Trying this by hand can be really difficult, the second part of the glitch is timing the tag. If the tag is too soon, nothing different will happen; it has to be done during a certain window but not nearly as hard as the grab.
Venom-Jin
The third way, and probably the easiest to do by hand. Venom Jin and any other characters. Venom does Venom-Web and DHC's to Jin's Cyclone super. If positioned right, Jin's Cyclone will catch them at the tip but it won't go through the regular animation. The character will fall out of the Cyclone while in the web and will be able to move around like normal. Venom-Jin Setup.
General Explanation
The reason for the the outcome when tagging is due to the bug causing an action to repeat itself. Every form of doing the bug has the same result -- at some point, it'll cause actions to repeat themselves. Every method of doing the bug has it's own unique effect, for instance, Spider-Man-Black Heart method allows the character to immediately hit the glitcher. This video shows Sentinel doing his Plasma ball super twice. Like I said, the general effect of the bug is to cause actions to happen twice, however the technical extent of the effect is pretty interesting. The bug allows characters to be able to do two of something they wouldn't normally be able to do. Example, Jill having two zombies on screen at once. In addition to being able to do something twice, the timing of the first action has a direct effect on how the game will process the second instance of said action. It's possible to time certain moves so that when they get repeated, they'll get stuck on screen or have a peculiar effect. Also, if the character DHCs while he is in the middle of doing a glitched action, there can be weird effects: Hulk DHCing during his Gamma Crush. This happened because the DHC caused the bug's effect to end, the game hadn't repeated (or moved around) Hulk's animation so he would not be stuck beneath the screen yet. That's pretty much it, you can come up with interesting outcomes by combining glitches together to get different results when doing the repeated action.
2 Character Bug Properties
There are universal properties that the 2-character bug has, these properties are always present no matter what method was used to activate it.
-
The glitched character is flying, they have all the properties of a regular point character while flying, except they can't be thrown.
The glitched character will be able to cause FS if they perform certain specials/supers.
- You get infinite assist uses of the glitched assist. It can be called out any number of times during a combo. They come out doing a special attack even if it's a normal move.
-
Once the character has been through the glitch, there are a few ways to knock them into the air so that they can do things:
-
If the glitched character does a super, whenever you tag that person in, there will be a long freeze during the tag out animation.
-
When you select your characters, the character you plan on switching out must be the first one selected. So if the team was Venom/Jin/X vs. X/X/Character Getting Tagged Out (glitched character), the character getting tagged out has to be the first one selected. If not, this will happen.
- When the glitched character does their super it causes the opponent's point character to turn darker than he was originally. This clip shows Jin getting darker when Doom does his super. Since supers cause the screen to darken when they activate and the character doing the super is glitched, the effect happens to the opponent.
- DHCing into another character while your glitched character is doing his/her super will cause the glitched character to repeat HP or HK depending on which button the DHC used (pp/kk). This clip shows the DHC and Doom repeating his HP.
- When the character tags in their glitched character anytime after they do a super, there will be a pause and the screen will turn dark before they come in. This is another effect of the game delaying the effects of super activations. This clip shows the effect and it also shows that Commando standing waiting to do his Corridor won't happen during the 2 character glitch.
- It's possible to switch the properties over to the middle assist via DHC. However, there are certain conditions to doing so. First, you have to make sure the glitched character is the second assist. Then, you'll have to DHC the characters withouth the point character doing a super. Here's the clip that shows what I mean. It's much easier to do it that way than to time the DHC if your point does a super. Here's the clip showing that. The timing for that is very strict and I'm not exactly sure what it's based on. Most of the time you'll end up having the assist finish their super then they'll start doing their hp/hk depending on which DHC you did as seen here.
Possibilities
There are a lot of different concepts you can create with the two character bug. For instance, you can test complicated situations out or test what would happen when ____ interferes with ____. There are pretty elaborate things you can do when you set up the two character bug for both sides and start messing around with the aspects of the engine that aren't typically exposed so much. Aside from experimenting with the engine, you could combine many glitches to make really elaborate and game breaking effects. Below are a few examples of different concepts found with the two character bug.
2-2-Character Bug
That's the name for when you give both sides a glitched character. For instance you can have Shuma/Magneto/x on both sides and give the 'x' the effect. The only drawback with using Shuma/Magneto is that there isn't going to be a dummy you can do things on. This shows Venom/Jin (Jin already glitched) performing the bug on another character. Since Venom is there the whole time the character is walking around, anything the glitched character does will hit Venom (a point character). This video shows the whole sequence.
Here is an example using the 2-2-Character setup. Felicia does her Help Me super on a character while Jin does his Blodia Punch on the other point character. This causes the Help Me super to get stuck but the hit counter keeps going. This is more stuff that happens during that situation.
3-Character Bug
This one is extremely impractical unless you have a program pad or just want to waste time. It takes 14 minutes for the setup to work and from there it gets harder since controlling 3 characters at the same time is pretty confusing. I made this video explaining the setup for the bug a year ago for Variable Atmosphere.
Examples
These are a few clips that show two character bug examples.
-
Joos's Magneto Combo: Wolverine is used to put Sentinel into a special stun so Magneto can jump up and throw him.
-
Joo's 999 Hit Combo: Rogue is used to catch Sentinel immediately out of stun. Psylocke's SJ LK caused the dizzy out.
- GCR Warp: I'm not sure what GCR Warp stands for, but this just shows Ruby Heart using her hook to grab the glitched character out of their flight. This causes a glitch that happens (as seen) in Bugrave-H, Cyclops did his HK-Throw + Ruby Heart's capture assist.
- Storm Link Combo (Unfinished): This is a combo I was doing a while ago but decided to scrap, anyway the idea is that the original point character uses snapbacks and super freezes to kill frames so that the glitched character can do links otherwise impossible.
- Venom Juggernaut Bug: I'm pretty sure the reason it caused the dummy to shoot up was because Venom had set some kind of special state that Juggernaut broke. Venom sets them in special stun and Juggernaut causes them to shoot up, the momentum upwards seemed to go up since the special stun was preventing Venom from going up.
