God of War II Combo Video Transcript

God of War 2 Combo Video Transcript
by: Magnetro

The combo video was a collaboration I did with Majestros, it was a lot of fun to do since I had never really tried to work hard on content for another game that isn't Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The video ended up turning out really well, and it surpassed my expectations in terms of how the content flowed. There were a lot of accidental syncs that ended up happening as well as syncs I tried to find. The most interesting part of the video editing process was trying to fit the song to the content of the video; the song is pretty dynamic and variable as opposed to the content, which is fast paced and in-your-face 99% of the time. Anyway, I'm proud of the combos and glitches that were in the video because I feel that they all had something special behind them. The combos in the video weren't just generic square-square-triangle segments; they were concepts being implemented in some form. I should mention that I used infinite magic, infinite health, and infinite rage of the titans. The main reason I used them was just to ease the recording process, not because all of the combos exceed the limit. Some of the combos are meant to show exploits in the game and other combos are meant to show interesting ideas chained together to create something stylish (in my opinion).

So, on with the actual transcript:

...first 22 seconds is just intro content...

  • Clip # 1: Ring Out Bug (:22): When you launch the opponent high enough on that training mode map (Daedalus) the person will fall out of the ring. Also, it shows that as soon as Kratos grabs the opponent, he will go through his throw animation even if the dummy isn't with him.

  • Clip # 2: Spontaneous Death Bug (:24): There are certain scenes in the game where you can't take an enemy with you as the camera or game loads.. This is an example of an opponent following Kratos when he's not supposed to. I'm no programmer, but my guess is that the elevator scene was loading some content and it was supposed to be absolutely clear of everything that isn't Kratos. So it was just programming code trying to resolve the situation..

  • Clip # 3: Across the Gap Kill (:26): Kratos kicks the hound across the gap killing two that were already there.

  • Clip # 4: Gorgon Bomb Throw Bug (:28): To set the situation up I launched the opponent and did a gorgon bomb blast (L1 + O) while the opponent was falling and threw him right before he got hit by it. As a result, Kratos did his throw animation on a dummy that was in stone. Afterwards, he breaks out and turns into stone again. The reason is unclear to me, but if I were go guess, the gorgon blast has a certain duration of time where it could turn you into stone; the blast hit half way through but was interrupted by a throw. The throw grabbed the person before the entire gorgon blast was finished, so after the throw ends, the opponent gets hit by the second part of the blast.

  • Clip # 5: Stuck in the Air Bug (:33): I found this bug while trying to land on the lever you use to turn the pillar. Kratos' hitbox must have touched something it wasn't supposed to and got stuck.

  • Clip # 6: Dead Body Bug (:34): I forget exactly how I did the bug since I recorded that clip around June of last year. However, I think it was something to do with killing the opponent in the air while the “O” popped up above his head. I'm not sure though.

  • Clip # 7: Pegasus Jump Bug (:35): Pegasus has odd properties when you try to jump over him. You can double jump and surf a little while Kratos is falling down. The landing he makes is the landing he'd make from a big fall/jump off a cliff.

  • Clip # 8: Kill Barbarian Horse (:36): Nothing special, just editing.

  • Clip # 9: Cyclops-Hammer Combo (:37): The combo is meant to show you can kill the cyclops in a few seconds with the absurdly-powerful hammer. I used 'guard/block' to cancel out my recovery (time you have to wait after the last hit you did) from the hammer swing.

  • Clip # 10: Wraith-Spear Combo (:51): The spear's L1+Triangle attack launches the opponent while Kratos recovers from his L1+Square attack. The opponent is juggled then grabbed and hit away, then the L1+Square attack's delayed explosion happens. That gives Kratos enough time to roll and do his ground throw while the dummy is spinning out. When Kratos tries to grab him during this time, the throw doesn't work correctly and Kratos ends up doing his animation anyway.

  • Clip # 11: Walk Through Statue (1:14): Nothing special, just editing.

  • Clip # 12: Pup-Magic Combo (1:16): The lightning ball blasts the pup away fast enough that Kratos can get a shotgun gorgon blast before the tornado hits.

  • Clip # 13: Fireball Reflect Combo (1:23): Kratos charges up his attack and fires it off right before the opponent throws his fireball at him. Kratos parries then throws the fireball back to the opponent, rolls towards and uses the special Triangle attack to cancel out the roll. This launches the opponent off the ground who gets juggled by an arrow and a hammer ghost right before he gets destroyed.

  • Clip # 14: Wraith-Tornado Combo (1:33): The combo shows an interesting property in the game's height and juggle system. When the opponent gets launched high enough, he's not supposed to be able to get juggled by anything in the game. So if I were to shoot arrows at him, they'd hit but they wouldn't juggle. I use the tornado to do a significant amount of damage without the added effect of a knockdown. This allows me to dash and normal-grab the dummy into death.

  • Clip # 15: Priest-Smash Combo (1:45): This is a full-life combo that is just meant to be stylish. I used the gorgon blast to slow down the priest's descent which gave me the ability to juggle him. I air throw the dummy back to the ground and I stomp him with Atlas air magic.

  • Clip # 16: Minotaur-Urn Combo (2:00): I use urn of the gorgons in the combo to allow Kratos to get juggles he wouldn't normally get on a minotaur grunt. Kratos grabs the minotaur and gets pushed back by his counter. Kratos activates rage of the titans right before the minotaur hits, causing the minotaur to go into stun. Kratos juggles him while slowly turning him into stone, this gives me enough time to use Poseidon's rage and keep the minotaur in the air.

  • Clip # 17: Kratos Flying (2:13): Nothing special, just editing.

  • Clip # 18-20: Nothing special, just editing.

  • Clip # 21: Special Throw Kill (2:24): I throw the sentry into the water wheel which accelerates his momentum quite a bit.

  • Clip # 22: Door Slam (2:26): Nothing special, just editing.

  • Clip # 23: Standing-Air Combo (2:34): I perform an air string on an E. Minotaur. The most difficult part of this was getting the combo on him without interruption. The combo will only work on a a few classes that aren't giants.

  • Clip # 24: Timed Explosion Combo (2:39): The combo starts off with Kratos parrying the opponents hit causing him to go into stun. I juggle him in the air until he becomes stunned, when this happens he's invincible while rising so I'm able to hit him with the spear L1+Square attack without him getting knocked back.

  • Clip # 25: Satyr-Lightning Combo (2:55): I cancel the spear launcher's recovery by switching into the blades of chaos and switching back; this allows me to keep juggling him for as long as I want. The satyr has a big hitbox in the air for being so skinny on the ground so I'm able get complete special moves on him (if Kratos' attacks are hitting in the air, his descent is slower). I timed the electricity to blow up right after my empty (I didn't mash) grab finishes.

  • Clip # 26: Bomb-Arrow Combo (3:14): I swung into gorgon blast him and swung back to shoot an arrow at the dummy from far away.

  • Clip # 27: Beast-Explosion Combo (3:20): Once again urn of the gorgons is used to juggle an opponent. The beast lord has surprisingly good resistance for being that tiny. I exploit that by juggling him from air to ground and using the spear's L1+Square attack to turn him into stone. The reason the combo meter doesn't reset is because I roll around and cancel the roll into a weak attack and cancel that into a roll over and over again.

  • Clip # 28: Vine-Throw Combo (3:32): I launch the opponent into the air and keep him suspended using the lightning ball, which allows me to jump up and grab him while on the vine.

  • Clip # 29: Parry-Wake Up Combo (3:41): The combo starts off by having Kratos parry the first hit of the opponents boomerang projectile. The opponent is completely invulnerable while throwing the projectile so Kratos is able to parry the first hit, go into L1+Triangle which cannot be canceled into anything until it's done. The second hit of the projectile hits Kratos which allows him to combo the throw thereafter. After the air combo and knock back, the opponent gets up with his special counter. I parry all of the hits (which don't break the combo meter) and launch him into Poseidon's rage.

  • Clip # 30: Gorgon-Minotaur Double Kill (4:05): I use the spear's L1+Square attack to stun the minotaur, grab the gorgon so she attacks, parry and shoot it back. The rest is timing.

  • Clip # 31: Crossing The Lowlands (4:14): This segment shows interesting things you can do while getting across. The first thing, I turned the statue behind Kratos so that I could activate the slowdown. This causes everything to fall much slower than it should while allowing Kratos to swing back and forth at normal speeds. I swing back from the fourth to third hooks before the third one breaks (which causes the camera to act strange). I swing out of the fourth one and do Poseidon's rage and swing back and out of it before it falls. Once I land, I do Atlas quake, normally you can't cancel that into anything, however, hooks/grapples are the only exception. I jump out and stall time with another Poseidon's rage. The rest of the segment is standard.

  • Clip # 32: Air Back Breaker Combo (4:55): I weaken the dummy with lightning balls, launch it, juggle it with bane's L2+Triangle. Since I'm near the wall, the wind ricochets off it causing the dummy to be hit later than usual. That allows me to recover while the opponent is just getting launched, which in turn, allows the spear to hit while the opponent is higher in the air. I activate another lightning ball and go into the grappling hook, jump out and air throw him.

That's the it, I hope you enjoyed it.
